German Engineers Said Bridge Would Take 6 Weeks — U.S. Engineers Built It In 9 Hours.

March seventeenth, nineteen forty-five. Oberst Heinrich Vogel stood at the western bank of the Rhine River near Remagen, watching the last German engineers wire demolition charges to the Ludendorff Bridge. American forces were less than five kilometers away. The bridge had to come down. Behind him, the retreat continued. Thousands of Wehrmacht soldiers, vehicles, and refugees streamed across the aging railroad bridge, desperate to reach the eastern shore before the Americans arrived. Vogel had been an engineer in the German army for twenty-three years. He understood bridges, understood demolition, understood timing. The charges were set. The detonators were tested. When the Americans reached the western approach, he would blow the bridge and trap them on the wrong side of the Rhine. Germany's last natural defensive barrier would remain intact. Then the scout cars appeared on the western heights. American armored reconnaissance, moving faster than German intelligence had predicted. Vogel gave the order. Detonate. The first explosion was premature, triggered by a stray artillery shell. It damaged the bridge approach but left the main span intact. The second attempt failed when a charge malfunctioned. Vogel watched in disbelief as American infantry began crossing the damaged but standing bridge. The Rhine, the barrier that was supposed to hold for weeks, had been breached in minutes.
