Original Video:    • Prokofjew - Sinfonie Nr. 1 | Alondra de la...   Remember back when we listened to Haydn’s Symphony No. 98 I said that he rarely imitated other composers, but others imitated him? In Symphony 98, he came the closest to imitating another composer that he ever did in his entire musical output with his tribute to Mozart in the second movement. The most famous example of another composer imitating Haydn, however, has got to be Prokofiev’s “Classical” Symphony. Prokofiev wanted to imagine how Haydn’s composition of music would have evolved had he lived into the 20th century. I first heard this work in college when a visiting orchestra played a program that included this work as well as a Haydn symphony (I believe it was No.92, the “Oxford”). Before the concert started, I got it in my mind that the first work on the program was the Haydn symphony (usually classical concerts start with music from older periods and move forward in time when there are works from multiple eras). It wasn’t until about halfway through the first movement that I looked at the program again to see what the hell was going on: They had started with the Prokofiev. There are close to a dozen performances of this work on YT that I listened to, and this one is easily my favorite. As an aside, I do not know why there are dancers up in the balcony during the second movement. Prokofiev wrote several ballets, his most famous being Romeo and Juliet, and I thought perhaps he reused some of the music from this symphony in one of his ballets, but I couldn’t find any information on that. Alas, I have no explanation for the dancers. One final note: I loved this conductor’s energy and enjoyed her infectious smile. It’s a great interpretation! I hope you enjoy it.
