Welcome to the Jack Reviews Musicals lore, Upstream Theatre! The End of the World Cabaret is Upstream’s musical(?) adaptation of Austrian playwright and poet Jura Soyfer’s 1936 futuristic satire of the same name. The Solar System’s cosmic dance is out of balance, and the blame is placed squarely on Earth’s inhabitants. The planets decide to restore order by sending a comet to bump into Earth and rid her of those pesky humans. From there, we explore the humans’ response to the impending apocalypse: political misgivings, self-sabotage, avoidance, and inaction. The End of the World is an investigation of humanity’s strangeness, complexity, beauty, and resilience.
