Mark Rylance in "Art Truth & Politics" by Harold Pinter
Filmed on October 4th 2018 at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London, Mark Rylance gave two performances of Harold Pinter's Nobel Prize acceptance speech "Art Truth & Politics" as part of Jamie Lloyd's Pinter @ The Pinter season. The idea came from Mark and the Stop The War campaign. Harry Burton was brought in by Mark to help stage the piece. We had a few rehearsals, not least to let Mark and the actor Reuben Grove (who on the night was backstage in a dressing room carefully speaking the lines into Mark's earpiece) practice their timing. It was all rather last-minute and performed at 6pm as a curtain-raiser, so to create a feeling of Pinter's study we had to improvise with whatever furniture came to hand. Someone found a cricket bat, surely the most evocative prop any actor could hope for when called upon to portray Harold Pinter. Pinter himself originally premiered "Art Truth & Politics" on Channel 4 on December 5th 2005. He was extremely unwell, unable to travel to Stockholm to deliver his speech in person, and, thanks to Michael Kustow's brilliant idea and John Wyver's resourcefulness, spoke it from a TV studio in London from a wheelchair.
