Contender

To show their support for the inclusion of women's boxing as an Olympic sport Lonsdale has teamed up with Director Brian Harrington and Betsy Works Production to produce 'Contender' - a inspiring, heart-warming and unexpected short film on the relationship between retired boxing champion Sean Murphy and his daughter and boxing protégé Lucy. The film is a portrait of an affectionate, atypical father/daughter relationship, which explores how their love and respect for each other is expressed through their mutual love for the sport of boxing. One is tied to the past, the other representative of a future for the sport. Lucy calm and confident, Sean tough, seasoned and protective. Both likeable, passionate about boxing and drawn closer by their passion for the sport. Sean Murphy fought eighty-six amateur fights for St Albans, won two ABA titles and won Gold at the 1986 Commonwealth Games during his amateur career. He became an outright winner of a Lonsdale belt during a notable professional career, which culminated in a hard fought loss to Steve Robinson in a WBO world title fight. He retired in 1994 and is now a senior coach at Finchley ABC. Lucy Murphy, Sean's daughter is, like her Dad, an exceptional boxer. This is due in no small part to the fact her Father trains her. Lucy started boxing when she was 16 and has won the ABA Senior Level Class B and competed at the Open Class ABA Championship. Although her weight category wasn't included this time around, her hopes and dreams lay on qualifying for the next Olympics.
