Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum detailed her hour-long meeting with King Felipe VI at the National Palace in Mexico City during a press conference on Friday. This marked the monarch's first visit to the country in seven years. "It was a very cordial meeting; he is a very down-to-earth person," the president summarized. During the conversation, she stated that she emphasized the importance of Indigenous peoples in Mexican history, both before and after colonization. "There is complete consistency in what we do. This meeting wouldn't have been possible without their outreach and these statements, so much so that even the Spanish right wing criticizes the King for coming to Mexico and making this visit," Sheinbaum noted. Felipe VI's visit culminates months of diplomatic rapprochement between the two countries following the clash between former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the Royal Household over the letter demanding an apology for the abuses committed during the Conquest. Sheinbaum has stated that the efforts of both governments to mend the rift, which began with the exhibition of indigenous women's art sent to Madrid at the end of last year, made the meeting with the monarch possible before the Spanish national team's match against Uruguay in Guadalajara. "We discussed other topics, obviously, trade, the economy, the state of the world, and the importance of recognizing the Charter of the United Nations—he brought that up," Sheinbaum indicated.
