Lukwago's Situation Looks Worse
Veteran opposition politician and lawyer Erias Lukwago has been remanded to Luzira Prison after being charged with misprision of treason, a charge he strongly denies. Lukwago, the former Lord Mayor of Kampala and president of the People's Front for Freedom (PFF), appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrate's Court where prosecutors accused him of allegedly failing to report information related to a suspected treason plot. The charge of misprision of treason is based on allegations that an individual knew about plans to commit treason but did not report them to the relevant authorities. The court ordered that Lukwago be remanded to Luzira Prison pending further proceedings. His appearance in court came days after his arrest by security operatives, an incident that sparked criticism from opposition leaders, lawyers, and human rights activists who questioned the circumstances surrounding his detention. Lukwago is widely known for representing opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye in ongoing legal battles and has remained one of the government's most outspoken critics. His arrest and subsequent remand have intensified political debate across the country, with supporters describing the case as politically motivated while authorities maintain that the charges are based on the law. During court proceedings, members of Lukwago's legal team raised concerns about his health and treatment while in detention. Lawyers told the court that he was experiencing severe pain and requested special medical consideration. The magistrate directed prison authorities to take his medical condition into account and allow arrangements for an orthopaedic mattress while he remains in custody. The development marks another dramatic chapter in Uganda's increasingly tense political environment. As one of the country's most recognizable opposition figures, Lukwago's detention has attracted significant public attention, with political observers closely watching the outcome of the case and any future court rulings regarding his release or continued detention.
