Knowlton Church & Earthworks | Where Christianity & Paganism Meet

Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! In 12th Century Dorset, the Norman's decided to build a christian church in the middle of a neolithic ceremonial earthwork. Historians believe this may have been to assert the dominance of the new religion over the old. The church served the nearby village, which sat on the banks of the River Allen, just 500 metres north-west of the church and earthworks. However, in the 17th century, the village population dwindled to such a point that regular worship ceased to happen at Knowlton Church. The church fell into a state of disrepair, and eventually, the roof fell in heralding the end of christian worship at this site. Knowlton remains a special place and is believed by many to be a significant place of spiritual interest. It is also believed to be the most haunted location in Dorset!
