The Schuman Show always brings you a quick rundown of what's been going on in politics and how the EU chose to respond. In this Midday Briefing, the European Commission spokesperson begins by highlighting U.S. president Donald J. Trump's 28-point peace plan for Ukraine, and the EU's own response to the ongoing war. Apart from that, the EU continues negotiations on the front of tariffs with the United States, presenting a list of EU goods that can hopefully be exempt from the trade war. In other news, COP30, the annual climate change conference, took place in Brazil and was a resounding success... depending on how one measures success, in the midst of the current climate crisis. Back in Belgium, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen was in talks with Belgian prime minister Bart De Wever on how to proceed with frozen Russian assets. Upon discussing using those assets for the ongoing war effort in Ukraine, the Belgian PM presented a list of demands before agreeing to the move. In broader politics, the European Parliament is under scrutiny: The European People's Party (EPP) has been in talks to work with the far-right. It isn't clear as to whether a line has been crossed, but thankfully our EC spokesperson has a handy list of who the EPP doesn't consider to be far-right.
