A Frontier Town That Declared War on Britain Before Independence
Before the Declaration of Independence in 1776, a small frontier town on the edge of the British Empire did something extraordinary. Hannastown — the first county seat west of the Allegheny Mountains — declared its intention to raise armed militias against Parliament, in May of 1775. This is the story of how Pennsylvania's first county seat west of the Allegheny Mountains struggled to be recognized by neighboring colonies & tribes, then chose to take up arms against British Parliament altogether. This defiance would ultimately be answered in fire. In the final months of the American Revolution, a British-Native American war party would burn Hannastown to the ground.
