When the US detonated the first atomic bomb, Stalin was not particularly impressed. The secret service had long been supplying the Soviet government with data from the Manhattan Project. This information enabled the Soviets to build their own nuclear weapons as early as 1949 – under the supervision of Lavrentiy Beria. The NKVD's network of agents secured the Soviet Union's superpower status. When Stalin died in 1953, Beria was a promising candidate to succeed him. However, Nikita Khrushchev, also a high-ranking party official, had him arrested as a spy in front of the Central Committee. He curtailed the power of the secret service and gave it a new name: the Committee for State Security (KGB). Domestically, it was no longer the absolute instrument of repression it was. But torture in prisons and confinement in psychiatric institutions would continue to be used by the secret service to harass opposition members, especially later under its new head, Yuri Andropov. When Stalin died in 1953, Beria was a promising candidate for his successor. But ... The Cold War reached its climax in 1962 with the Cuban Missile Crisis – bringing the entire world closer to the brink than ever before. Nikita Khrushchev knew about the situation through various means, including his British agents, the "Cambridge Five," as well as through sex-based espionage and blackmail. As nuclear confrontation between the US and the Soviet Union loomed, Aleksandr Feklisov, a KGB agent in Washington, helped avert the catastrophe of total nuclear destruction. But then the KGB recruited a mole at the top of the CIA...
