A female convenience store clerk in Taipei had pre-ordered 32 cups of coffee and paid for them. One day, after working 18 consecutive hours and being exhausted from the night shift, she made one cup of coffee but forgot to pay again. The store manager sued her. The first-instance court sentenced her to three months in prison for theft. However, on appeal, the High Court judge ruled that she had already paid for the coffee and criticized the employer for using criminal means to handle a civil dispute.
