It's seen in medieval artwork and was used by the Burgundians as a wood for hunting bows. A selfbow is made from a single stave with no laminations; a recurve curls the limb tips away from the archer for more stored energy. In this build I'm steam-bending those recurves into the wood. In part 3 of the series I heat treat the bow, repair some cracks in the sapwood and then tiller it to full draw length. Heat treatment is done with a source of 'dry' heat to force out moisture and change the properties of the wood somewhat. It increases the ability to withstand crushing force better, so it is useful only on the belly of the bow. At the same time It can be use to permanently change the shape of the wood somewhat, so I use it to force in some extra reflex. This process increases the bow's performance and adds some draw weight.
