Creating His Own Opportunities: How Davinder Singh Built Polyhouses in Punjab to Grow His Own Future

Meet Davinder Singh from Mushkabad, Punjab. In the 1990s, after facing multiple U.S. visa rejections, he turned to farming out of necessity. With no inheritance and only a small patch of sandy, non-arable land, he began cultivating chilies on half an acre, earning ₹45,000 from sales in Chandigarh's kisan mandi. With his wife Baljit Kaur’s support in dairy farming, he expanded to 10 acres, incorporating drip irrigation. His innovative approach led him to build bamboo polyhouses, later upgraded to steel structures, cultivating exotic vegetables like colored capsicum and seedless cucumbers. His 5-acre polyhouse farm now yields profits of ₹8–10 lakh per acre, with produce reaching markets in Dubai and the UK. Recognized with awards from Punjab Agricultural University and the Indian Council for Agricultural Research, Davinder has also trained farmers globally. Today, alongside his son Jasdeep, a PAU graduate, Davinder continues to inspire, proving that with determination, one can cultivate success right at home. He aims to establish a trade route for exporting vegetables, expand his business, and train young minds in modern farming practices. He envisions a program where youth can stay on the farm for two months to learn the intricacies of agriculture. To achieve this vision, he seeks support from NRI brothers and sisters to take his mission to the next level. While traditional crops like wheat and rice offer modest returns, cultivating colored capsicum under polyhouse conditions can yield significantly higher profits.
