Saint John the Russian talks to Saint Iakovos Tsalikis
The video was first uploaded on the YouTube channel of the Cultural and Environmental Foundation of the Holy Metropolis of Morphou: • Ὁ Γέροντας Ἰάκωβος συνομιλεῖ μὲ τὸν ἅγιο Ἰ... [St. John the Russian]: "Iakovos, it's not God who will make war. Men want war, men will wage war!" • Saint Paisios Athonite - Sermon of Metropo... (at 40:50) Notes (1) This is a comment by a Greek theologian who was asked: How can God allow such a terrific war (worse than anything humanity has witnessed so far) to take place? "It must be clarified that God is not the cause of war, just as He is not the cause of death. These are the results of sin, the fall, disobedience, and the distancing of humans from Him. When man voluntarily denies God and drives Him away from his life, he himself flees from the divine protection and grace. Sin, the fall, and dehumanization (which among other things also lead to wars) are the results of this distancing, for which man alone is responsible, not God. He simply allows disasters, catastrophes, and wars, either for pedagogic (chastening) purposes or to stop and limit evil when it proliferates and takes on massive and terrifying demonic dimensions. This is obviously implied in the aforementioned words of Saint John the Russian regarding the necessity of war. As for the question, “How can a God of mercy and love allow such atrocities to happen to people like wars,” it wouldn’t be out of place to mention here the opinion of the great contemporary Serbian saint Nikolai Velimirović, who considers this question ridiculous and emphasizes that “it can be answered with the serious question: How is it possible for people, to whom God has clearly revealed His will and His laws, to insult God without shame and repentance, to blaspheme God and violate His commandments without restraint?” For certainly, in the world, there are not only human laws. There are also spiritual laws - and from these, no one can hide or escape..." If anyone wishes to know more about: Who will wage the war? Why they will wage it? Why God won't prevent it this time just like He has done many times in the past? Who has managed to ensure that fewer evils will happen than what is originally expected? What can I as an individual do to lessen the gravity of the coming events? Watch as many videos as you can from this playlist: • Why does God become "angry" with people (2) There is plenty of material online for anyone who wishes to learn about the kind of man, Saint Iakovos Tsalikis was, and by extension, what one can make of his words. The official YouTube channel of the Holy Monastery of Evia is a good place to start: / @ΙεράΜονήΟσίουΔαυίδ Let me just cite these words by Fr. Simeon: Fr. Simeon: "St. Iakovos is a great, great saint. God won’t give Orthodoxy another saint like him again. Whoever had the chance to meet him was lucky. There are going to be many more saints. The [Orthodox] Church never ceases to produce saints, but you won’t see again a St. Iakovos. He is such 'an ancient thing.' The centuries collaborated with Asia Minor and the family of his mother so that this man could be made." • Discussion with Young People from St. Nich... (at 35:00) (3) The conversation between St. Iakovos and St. John the Russian, according to the most trusted source which is the book published by the monastery of St. David of Evia, took place on the 14th of July, 1990. The book's name is: PUBLICATIONS OF THE FATHERS OF THE HOLY MONASTERY OF SAINT DAVID THE ELDER, ROVIES EVIA 1993. at p. 43. The following article (at p. 15) translates the segment of interest as found at p. 43 of the book I cited. See here: https://www.imdleo.gr/diaf/files/engl... [Link 1] Same here: https://iconandlight.wordpress.com/20... [Link 2] (4) At 1:05 in the video, Saint Iakovos is talking about the time he was hospitalized in October 1967 and had four surgeries. Saint John the Russian and Saint David of Evia visited him to help him. He was able to see and talk to them, but the other priests present could not. This online article in Greek describes the event as contained in the book "Saint Iakovos (Tsalikis): A Contemporary Saint" (2018): https://www.pemptousia.gr [Link 3] (5) Metropolitan Neophytos has spoken publicly numerous times about this discussion between St. Iakovos Tsalikis and St. John the Russian. One example: And (at 56:38) in the video: • "Is War the Father and the King of all"?? ...
