Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo - Baby Elephant Born 7 29 2013
Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo welcomed a new baby this week. The zoo keepers announced the birth of a female elephant calf on the zoo's Facebook page Monday. The baby elephant is 10 days old. She is the second female born in Tampa from a herd of 11 elephants rescued from culling in Swaziland, Africa, according to the zoo's website. Her mother is Matjeka, a first-time mom, her dad is Sdudla. She has an older sister, Mpumi. The new-born is the third elephant born in the zoo in 25 years. The mom and the baby will stay off-exhibit to bond. Zoo keepers will reintroduce them to the rest of the females before returning them to the outdoor yard. That's when the guests will be able to meet them. Zac Atwood, City of Tampa Television, CTTV, www.tampagov.net/CTTV
