Clipse & Superman Are Here To Save You

Maybe they both are the real punk rock… This is a video essay / review of James Gunn’s Superman (2025) and Clipse’s comeback album, Let God Sort ‘Em Out, two blockbuster releases that dropped on the same day and restored the feeling that many thought might be too old fashioned. This is a Superman movie where Superman actually acts like Superman and an album where the artists promoted it, took their time, and delivered something authentic. In an era of rushed rollouts, ironic detachment and snark, these two projects dared to be sincere and authentic. The result? Box office numbers and Billboard placements suggest the demand for hope, hustle, and honesty never really left, these industries just forgot how to deliver it. The new film written & directed by James Gunn stars David Corenswet in the titular role, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as the iconic comic book villain, Lex Luthor, and a slew of other heroes including Nathan Fillion, Isabella Marced and Edi Gathegi as the Green Lantern / Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific. The film comes on the heels of Gunn’s post-MCU firing, rehiring and eventual hiring at DC after the revelation of controversial old tweets back in 2018. He ended up being able to finish his beloved Marvel trilogy with Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 in 2023 but now has his sights set on a new universe, as the head of DC Studios and the architect of the DCU. It’s been 16 long years since the last Clipse album, 2009’s Til The Casket Drops. Before that, the Virginia Beach duo made waves with their Neptunes-produced debut Lord Willin’ (2002) and the critically acclaimed Hell Hath No Fury (2006). In the wake of their last album, Malice (changed to then No Malice but now back to Malice) stepped away from rap to focus on his faith, while Pusha T carved out a thriving solo career, eventually becoming president of Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint. Despite sporadic reunions on Jesus Is King, I Know NIGO!, and It’s Almost Dry, fans were still waiting on a full-length Clipse return. That moment finally arrived with Let God Sort ’Em Out, a project that sounds unlike anything they’ve done before, yet feels truer to their identity than ever. The album’s release followed a now-iconic rollout: interviews, merch drops, magazine covers, singles, and performances all building anticipation. But behind the scenes, the album also sparked controversy. In 2024, a reported fallout with Universal Music Group & Def Jam occurred over a Kendrick Lamar feature, creating friction between the group and the label ahead of the album’s release and ultimately their exit. JAY-Z and RocNation stepped in to distribute the project. The tension didn’t end there, the project also ignited a beef with former G.O.O.D.
