Que cachaient vraiment les bâtisseurs de Beauvais ?
We left you with a question: why build so high, so grand, for so long? Here's the rest. Beauvais, 1225. The bishops decided to defy the heavens: 48 meters under the vault, when Paris reached 33 and Amiens 42. Sixty years later, at the end of November 1284, a gust of wind. A sharp crack. The tallest choir in Christendom collapsed. No one counted the dead. But Beauvais was just a symptom. In Reims, twenty years earlier, the city had already cracked: barricades, the archbishop driven out, two years without Mass. A medieval tax revolt that no one talks about anymore. In Amiens, in Laon, the same tension was rising—paying for the cathedral, or feeding their children. In the face of this, something new was emerging in the guilds: brotherhoods, common funds, the audacious idea that an injured worker could rely on his peers. The first forms of social protection in Europe. Seven centuries before trade unions, in the dust, at the foot of cathedrals. And 800 years later, we're still living it. When Notre-Dame burned in 2019, it was this moment—the broken bodies of the stonemasons, the barricades of Reims, the stone that refused to reach the sky in Beauvais—that came back to haunt us.
