MMSEZ The Promise of Progress and Peril Earthlife Africa
MMSEZ – The Promise of Progress and Peril (short-film) On 27 June 2023, to wrap-up #EnvironmentMonth, Earthlife Africa Johannesburg held a public screening of the short-film MMSEZ - The Promise of Progress and Peril for their partners in Musina- Makhado area. This has been a long and challenging journey so far, but these communities remain resolved to protect their cultural heritage. It is with the affected communities’ approval that we share this moving, impactful production with you. In 6 mins, you will understand the immense threat the proposed Musina Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ) – a mega-industrial development – poses for the precious Vhembe region, which is rich in biodiversity and #culturalidentity. Earthlife Africa also created a Public Participation Handbook – guided by the Constitution, the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), as well as other relevant laws – to help make clear to South Africans which legislation and laws apply to protecting the environment, as well as identifying the role- players involved in environmental management. The aim of these tools is to ensure that communities around the country are equipped to stand up for their rights and the rights of the environments they depend on.
