Switching Banjo Chords
Learn how to play and switch the three most useful banjo chords, G, C, and D, in this free beginner lesson with Geoff Hohwald. These are the chords you lean on most when you back up other players in a bluegrass jam. Geoff shows you the G shape and the C shape, which becomes a D when you slide it up two frets, a simple make and shake method to get each chord ringing clearly, and the slide and reverse trick that lets you move between them smoothly. You will practice slowly, then with a metronome, and finally strum along to Going Down the Road Feeling Bad. Once these feel comfortable, your next lesson is Playing Beginning Banjo Rhythm, where Geoff adds the boom chunk timing that gives the banjo its drive: • Beginning Banjo Rhythm 1 Lesson Chapters 0:00 Introduction 0:30 The G chord at the 7th fret 1:02 The make and shake practice method 1:56 The C and D chord shape 3:00 Two steps to switching chords 3:22 Switching from G to C 4:43 Switching from G to D 5:30 Practice with a metronome 6:32 Up to speed 8:33 Play along: Going Down the Road Feeling Bad 10:28 What to learn next New to the banjo?
