Beginner Sewing - How to make a Fleece Headband and Scarf tutorial!
Beginner lesson in hat making with this fleece headband and scarf neck warmer set DIY. Easy and fabulous headband and scarf set made from cosy polar fleece fabric. Cooler weather climates require some warm headwear choices for part of the year and here in Canada we are sort of specialists to this calling! This project, an original design by Mad Cap Hats's Tori Capes, Certified Milliner, takes two simple rectangle shapes of medium weight polar fleece and turns them into comfortable warm and flattering fashion accessories! Make yourself a cosy warm fleece headband and matching neckwarmer scarf. These are both easy beginner level sewing projects and I offer ways to level up the design with some trimming ideas as well. If you have a larger or smaller then average head size you may need to adjust the length the headband rectangle. For the average woman's head size of 22.5 inches or 57.5 cm, I used a length that is .5 inches less then average, or 22 inches or 56 cm to start. There are three seams of sewing in the headband so the result reduces the stretch but still gives a very comfortable fit. Adjust as you need. For the neckwarmer, the depth of the finished piece around your neck can be adjusted with a hem or by making the cuff deeper then 4 inches or 10 cm. You can also leave part of the back seam open at the bottom to widen the bottom edge. We have made 1000s of headbands at Mad Cap Hats, lots of them requiring the use of serger to maintain the stretch of the fabric. This headband does not use the serger so that is why we start off with a piece of fabric that is almost our head size. As the lessons continue we will have a couple of other headbands suggestions using winter fabrics coming up that require a serger but this is our basic and it is an excellent headband to make and wear and love!
