This Luxury Hotel Was Designed to Make You Feel Instantly Calm
This luxury hotel was designed to feel like a sanctuary from the pace of the city, and 1 Hotel Melbourne delivers this intention through a deeply considered union of biophilic design, sustainability and refined hospitality. Positioned along the Yarra River, the hotel draws from its natural and cultural context to create an environment where calm is not incidental but embedded in every spatial decision. From the outset, the luxury hotel was designed around a philosophy that places wellbeing at its core. Architecture by FK establishes a contemporary framework that responds to Melbourne’s evolving urban fabric while maintaining a strong relationship to landscape and water. Rather than presenting as an isolated object, the building feels grounded in place, shaped by its riverside setting and the rhythms of the city beyond. Interior design is approached through two distinct yet complementary lenses. The hotel interiors, led by One Design Office in collaboration with Starwood Hotels, translate the brand’s sustainability-driven ethos into a locally grounded narrative. Materials are selected not for novelty, but for meaning, longevity and provenance. Reclaimed timbers, recycled bridge skins and locally sourced finishes are layered throughout the spaces – the luxury hotel was designed to quietly educate as much as it comforts. Storytelling plays a central role in shaping the guest experience. Across the lift lobbies, material transitions trace the evolution of housing in Victoria, offering subtle moments of reflection as guests move through the building. In the rooms, recycled bridge materials are reimagined as tactile bedhead backings, extending the lifecycle of infrastructure while creating warmth and texture. These gestures reinforce the idea that luxury here is not defined by excess, but by intention. Residential interior design by Carr introduces a more intimate scale, balancing the public nature of a hotel with the familiarity of home. Soft palettes, considered furnishings by Ward & Gray and an emphasis on comfort ensure that spaces feel restorative rather than performative. The luxury hotel was designed to allow guests to exhale – to feel connected to nature, materiality and a slower pace of living. Landscape architecture by OCULUS further strengthens this connection, weaving greenery and natural elements through the site to blur the boundary between indoors and out. The presence of planting, natural light and views to the river reinforces the hotel’s biophilic foundations. Sustainability underpins every layer of the project, not as a marketing exercise, but as a guiding principle. The luxury hotel was designed to demonstrate that comfort, beauty and sustainability can coexist seamlessly. Ultimately, 1 Hotel Melbourne reframes contemporary hospitality by prioritising how spaces make people feel. Calm, warmth and connection emerge through material choices, spatial sequencing and sensory restraint. It is a project that invites guests to step away from the intensity of daily life and into an environment shaped by care, purpose and a quiet sense of luxury. 00:00 - A Marriage Between Lifestyle, Sustainability and Luxury 00:54 - Biophilic Design Ethos 01:35 - Design Brief for 1 Hotel Melbourne 02:30 - Storytelling with Interior Design 03:16 - Recycling Materials 03:40 - What Makes Luxury 04:52 - Prioritising How People Feel in Spaces For more from The Local Project: Instagram – / thelocalproject Website – https://thelocalproject.com.au/ LinkedIn – / the-local-project-publication Print Publication – https://thelocalproject.com.au/public...
