Chris Killip in Askam

As part of the RPS Historical Group's series of talks looking at historical collections of photography, photographic archives, and those working historical and alternative processes this talk looks at the work of Chris Killip in Askam-in-Furness through the Signal Archive. In the summer of 2025, in preparation for their exhibition, Chris Killip, Askam-in-Furness September 2025, Signal led a project reaching out to the Askam community to see if they remembered Killip’s visit back in 1982. They were amazed to discover a number of images that members from the community had been gifted by the photographer and the wonderful stories behind the photos. This work was shown alongside the main collection in 2025. Signal Programme Manager, Liz Critchley, accompanied by one of the image recipients from the Askam community will talk about the discovery and show these photographs and memories of Killip’s time in the village.
