Spicy Hive! How to split and requeen ...
Got a big spicy hive of bees? This is what I do with them. First, and most important, is take them somewhere I can work them safely - that means like out in the boonies. You can see in the background all my mess as I'm working out in a yard in a rural area where I store my stuff. (On a side note, if anyone out there is looking for a little side work, I need help cleaning and organizing the area where I "store my stuff" - it's chaos right now as it's been too hot these days to work out there.) In retrospect on this one, I probably could have used a lot more smoke on the original hive to calm them down, but I find that once the bees get revved up like they did that smoke just doesn't do too much and it's best to just keep moving. I did find the queen in the original hive and, though I'd assumed she was a "feral" queen from wild genetic, saw that she was in fact marked with a yellow dot indicating she was a known queen purchased in 2022. Regardless, I bid her adieu and made a couple of nucs and requeened her original hive. I left this video long as I've gotten some feedback on other platforms that the short videos I put together are entertaining but kind of gloss over the nitty-gritty. And with what I do there is quite a bit of nitty and it is in fact rather gritty, so I just left it all in ... mostly. I cut and sped up in editing in parts that didn't interest me (I reckoned that wouldn't interest you either) and missed a center section because my phone overheated in the Texas sun. Please let me know thoughts and if you are interested in seeing more content like this. Lastly, I welcome feedback and suggestions for how I roll, but will terminate any turd-hurling haters on this or any other post. I see and receive lots of comments on beekeeping posts that are pretty troll-like. I can take feedback but don't be a jagoff about it. That is all.
