In this episode we're heading on a historic Detroit style pizza tour. We're going to be hitting three of the legendary spots trying a slice from each and I'm going to figure out which one has the best pizza! Stay tuned. Below are the spots we're going to visit today Buddy's Pizza (6 Mile and Conant) History: Buddy's Pizza is widely credited as the birthplace of Detroit-style pizza. In 1946, Gus Guerra, the original owner, started making a unique square pizza using blue steel pans originally meant for holding nuts and bolts. This innovation gave rise to the signature thick, crispy crust and caramelized edges. Significance: Buddy’s laid the foundation for Detroit-style pizza, becoming a landmark in Detroit's culinary scene. Loui’s Pizza History: Loui's Pizza in Hazel Park was founded by Louis Tourtois, a former chef at Buddy’s. After learning the craft at Buddy’s, he opened his own pizzeria in 1977, carrying forward the tradition of Detroit-style pizza with his unique touches. Significance: Loui’s is a key player in spreading the Detroit-style pizza legacy, offering a slightly different take that has earned it a loyal following. Green Lantern Pizza History: Green Lantern Pizza dates back to 1955 and is another beloved institution in the Metro Detroit area. Though not originally a Detroit-style pizzeria, it has embraced the style over the years, blending its traditional pizza roots with the popular square format. Significance: Green Lantern represents the evolution and adaptability of Detroit’s pizza scene, showcasing how the iconic style has influenced even older establishments. Have a great week, get out there, and get after it!
