GYUTO MONASTERY, TENZIN GANG, ARUNACHAL PRADESH
Gyuto Monastery, located in the Tenzingang Tibetan Settlement (West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh), is a major institute of the Gelug Order. Established to preserve tantric traditions in exile, the monastery acts as a vital spiritual and cultural center for both Tibetan settlers and the local Monpa and Sherdukpen communities. The region is highly remote. Visitors typically fly into Guwahati (Assam) or Tezpur, then travel by road up into West Kameng. Founded in Tibet in 1474. Following the 1959 exile, the monks initially gathered in Dalhousie before permanently establishing the Tenzingang monastery in 1974 at the instruction of the Central Tibetan Administration. Foreign travelers and domestic visitors may need to arrange an Inner Line Permit (ILP) or Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit this Monastery.
