As with so many other postural forms, the lifting of the lower belly (the engagement of the lower bandha) really brings this posture alive. The currents of sensation circulate throughout the body, and return to the center of the pelvic floor. That tender center becomes the bindu of the mandala, the focal point out of which the entire posture is formed. . The bandha allows the immense support of the earth to spiral upward through the feet and pelvis to the lotus of the heart, where it can expand outward with an exhilarating radiance, which remains grounded at all times. . This internal pattern is rather easily obscured by poor alignment, but there are many variations of the posture in which the alignment is accessible. These may involve keeping the keeping the back knee on the floor and holding the hands in prayer position, or lifting the heel to straighten the back leg, or perhaps grounding one hand on the floor and reaching the other straight for the sky. . But whatever the variation, the internal pattern is more or less the same, and if you use that pattern as the reference, the body will teach you how the external form should be arranged.
