With TPS ending for Haitian immigrants, nearly 15,000 in Ohio could be impacted

Nearly 15,000 people across Ohio could be affected Monday as the temporary protected status for Haitian immigrants expires. The Haitian Support Center in Springfield says it's receiving thousands of questions about what the end of TPS means for their work permits, legal protections and safety. Those who support TPS ending, like Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno, say temporary means temporary, but those who are concerned about its end say it's as dangerous as ever to go back to Haiti. As of right now, the U.S. Department of State has Haiti issued under a Level 4 "Do Not Travel" advisory, citing gang violence, kidnapping, civil unrest and shortage of basic necessities. "Ninety-one percent of the Haitians that are in the United States came here under the Biden era. They came here illegally, filed false asylum claims and they were granted amnesty by Biden. That was for five years ago. It's temporary," said Moreno. "The situation is getting worse and worse. We [have]more gangs in Haiti; more cities are being occupied by the hoodlums," said James Fleurjean of the Haitian Support Center.
