Field Notes: Who May Eat Nevelah?
Who May Eat Nevelah? Torah's Forgotten Foreigner Who may eat nevelah, and what does that reveal about Torah's covenantal world? In this session, we explore Deuteronomy 14:21 and uncover the often-overlooked distinction between the ger and the nokhri, showing how Torah's boundaries are not barriers but the architecture of covenantal ascent. We also examine the covenantal meaning of nokhri throughout the Tanakh and conclude with Isaiah 56, where the "son of the foreigner" is invited to join himself to YHWH and His people. If Torah permits the ger and the nokhri to eat what Israel may not, what does that tell us about the true nature of biblical food laws?
