Western Balkans: Who is really moving closer to the EU? | Spasimir Domaradzki

The EU–Western Balkans Summit in Tivat highlighted Montenegro as the frontrunner in the potential process of integration with the European Union. Albania is also seen as a strong candidate for membership. However, the challenge is not limited to meeting accession criteria. “Today, there is little enthusiasm within EU member states for further enlargement,” said Spasimir Domaradzki, political scientist at the Institute of Central Europe and the University of Warsaw, on World Talks. The expert also noted that Western Balkan countries have been waiting for EU membership since 2003. “If the EU wants to maintain its credibility and its ability to enforce reforms, it must treat this issue seriously,” he added.
