The Tassie: Origins and History of Australia's Axe (1891-1908)
This video explores the origins and history of the Tasmanian-pattern axe, known affectionately as the "Tassie", which is the only axe pattern to have been developed in Australia in modern times. Although first mass-produced in the USA, this axe design was the invention of axemen from northern Tasmania, particularly H. A. Nichols, who was the driving force behind not only the Tassie design, but also the establishment of competitive wood chopping as an organised sport. The development of the Tassie parallels the story of the Australian nation in its early history. All images used in this video are displayed for educational purposes only.
