In his early life he served in the army, commanding a troop of tanks in the 11th Hussars in Germany before deciding in 1970 to leave the military and become a writer. He has published several popular historical works including the best-selling, Stalingrad (1998), Berlin: The Downfall 1945 (2002) and, most recently, Russia: Revolution and Civil War, 1917-1921 (2022). His works have been translated into 35 languages and have sold over 8.5 million copies.
