Englishman John Truscott is sent to colonial Borneo to build schools and educate local children. There he meets Selima, assigned to him as a Sleeping Dictionary, a woman he's supposed to be intimate with to help him learn the local language. John is initially reluctant, but as he gets to know Selima more, he falls in love with her. Their fates are not to be together, however, as both the English and the Iban tribe forbid such union, and John and Selima fight the odds for their love.
