48 Hours in Reykjavík | Hallgrimskirkja, Rainbow Road, Hot Dogs, & More | Top Sites & Foods

Iceland is known for its epic landscapes and out-of-this-world scenery, but you can't visit Iceland without checking out its capital, Reykjavík. Full of attractions and museums, great food, spas, and serving as the starting points for lots of tours into the wilderness, Reykjavík is worth your attention. Dominating the downtown skyline is Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavík's iconic church. It is the largest church in Iceland at 73 meters high. Since it's located in the city center, climbing to the tower is a must to see the panoramic views of the city and, if the day is clear, the surrounding glaciers and Greenland. The church is also home to the largest organ in the country. We happened to visit the morning before an organ concert so we had a chance to hear the organist practice. Check out the website for future concerts and events. Reykjavík has a pretty spectacular food scene and there is something for everyone. If you are looking for an amazing treat to start your day, you have to check out Brauð & co. for the iconic cinnamon rolls. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. There are several locations around the city, but the one closest to Hallgrímskirkja is also near Reykjavík Roasters so you can grab a coffee as well. If you want something more savory, you can try the Pósthús Food Hall & Bar, which is home to 9 different restaurants. But you can't visit Iceland without indulging in a classic hot dog and Bæjarins Beztu Pylsu is one of the most famous hot dog establishments in the city. To end your food tour of the city, check out Icelandic Street Food, which is known for having great warm soups, free waffles, and free refills of their favorite soups. Finally, some of the very best things to do in Reykjavík are actually outside of the city including the country's famous geothermal hot springs and spas. Blue Lagoon and Sky Lagoon are the most well known, but if you want something a bit more natural and off the beaten path, check out Hvammsvík Nature Resort & Hot Springs. Located about a 45 minutes drive outside of the city along a fjord, Hvammsvík is a dream for those looking to soak in a natural spa and take in the beauty of the surroundings. We attempted to visit in the evening in hopes of seeing the northern lights, but a storm prevented us from seeing much of anything. If you want as close to a guarantee as you will get to see the aurora while you are in Iceland, check our a tour company that specializes in chasing the northern lights.
