Robben Island Museum to unveil Andimba Toivo ya Toivo statue - nbc

The Robben Island Museum is set to unveil a life-size statue of the late liberation icon Andimba Toivo ya Toivo at the reunion of former prisoners on September 27 in South Africa. During this ceremony, five more sculptures will be unveiled to honour the ones who were incarcerated on the island during the apartheid era. A wall of remembrance featuring the names of former prisoners will be disclosed at the ceremony to honour their struggles and sacrifices fully. In an appearance on NBC's Good Morning Namibia programme, the widow of the late Toivo ya Toivo, Vicky Erenstein ya Toivo, said she will be honoured to represent her late husband's legacy and Namibia at large.  "I was contacted in June, early in June, by the Robben Island Museum and the South African government to inform me that there will be a reunion on Robben Island on the 27th of September where former prisoners and family members will be present; that on Robben a wall of remembrance will be unveiled with the names of all the former prisoners; in addition, there will be six life-size statues with prominent former prisoners or residents of Robben Island. One of them will be Andimba, and they asked, 'Do you accept this?' We said we would be honoured, but we see this in a representative capacity. Andimba is there and will be there to represent Namibia and to represent the former prisoners." A delegation of former prisoners and family members from Namibia is expected to attend the ceremony.
