Questions Every Deckbuilder Should Ask Themselves

The next time you build a deck, ask yourself these questions before, during, and after the deckbuilding process to help guide your decisions! Before Deckbuilding – Who is my commander? – What is the “theme” of my deck? Am I including any subthemes? (   • Narrowing Your Focus  ) – Why do I want to build this deck? – What is my gameplan? What does the turn by turn breakdown look like? How do I expect the game to end? – How does my commander contribute to my gameplan? Is my commander an enabler, payoff, or enhancer? – What bracket or power level am I building to? (   • Redefining Power Levels  ) During deckbuilding – Do I expect to be playing in an open meta or a closed meta? – What am I prepared to interact with? (   • Assessing Threats in Commander  ) – Am I running enough vegetables? (   • Deckbuilding and Power Levels  ) – What does my mana curve look like? (   • Managing Your Mana Curve  ) – What game changers, if any, am I including? – What are the power-level outliers in my deck? After deckbuilding – How often do I play this deck? – How well is this deck performing? How consistent is this deck? – Do I have fun playing this deck? – Do my friends have fun playing against this deck?
