5 Poisonous Plants To Avoid While Foraging Wild Edibles
There are many poisonous plants to avoid while foraging wild edibles but today we are going to cover five of them and talk a bit about how they look or where they grow. Some of these plants have look a likes that are perfectly edible or medicinal, and some even have poisonous relatives. Some plants can cause sickness, skin rash or discomfort, whereas others can cause death. From the common Poison Ivy and Poison Hemlock to the notorious Pokeweed and Nightshade these are five poisonous plants to avoid while foraging wild edibles. Poison Ivy is known for it's ability to cause skin rashes and growing almost everywhere. The essential oils are what cause the reaction as they get absorbed through the skin after touching the plants. Horsenettle, or Thorny Nightshade is a common variety of nightshade. They are known for being poisonous and also the forefather to the domestic tomato . Virginia Creeper is a woody climbing vine with five leaves that often grows through or near wild edibles. Touching the plant is safe, however ingestion is not as it can cause severe burning in the throat and stomach. Poison Hemlock is a plant that's known for being the poison of Socrates in the 4th century B.C. and is potent toxin to be avoided.
