Gerrit Pieper: 160 Kühe, Hybridzucht & smarte Stalltechnik

In this video, we introduce Gerrit Pieper's farm, which operates a double-16 herringbone milking parlor with approximately 160 milking cows. Since 2007, the farm has relied on artificial insemination and various crossbreeds, including Swedish Red, Simmental, and Holstein Friesian. Since 2020, the focus has shifted to targeted hybrid breeding with Montbéliarde, Red, and Holstein Friesian. A particular highlight is the sophisticated water management system: The warm water generated during the pre-cooling of the milk is not wasted but used directly as drinking water for the cows. Combined with switching to road water, this results in significantly higher water intake and thus increased milk production per cow. On July 2, 2026, the farm invites visitors to its open farm day. Farm manager Gerrit Pieper will give a tour of the farm and provide fascinating insights into animal husbandry, breeding, and modern barn technology. Furthermore, Udo Carstensen will give a lecture on the enormous potential of hybrid breeding.
