The Valley Railroad: 4 Engines on the North Pole Express

The Essex Steam train and Riverboat runs a handful of different excursions throughout the year, but by far the most famous and eventful one is the railroad’s flagship, The North Pole Express. This event, running between early November and late December, resembles the children’s move “The Polar Express”, where children and their families can board a 90-minute round trip ride from Essex to the North Pole and back aboard a vintage, 1900s era steam locomotive. During the ride, passengers sing Christmas carols, munch on some sugar cookies, drink a nice warm hot chocolate, and meet Santa and Mrs. Claus. While this is a great time for passengers, this is quite the operation for railfans. The North Pole Express consists of 4 train sets, with a 4th train debuting for 2024, and features all 3 of the Valley Railroad’s steam engines, and one of their switcher locomotives. The trains depart every half hour from 2-8PM, and offer a fun experience for both passengers and railfans. On both the opening weekend and the last day of steam for the NPE’s 2024 season, we chased the operations throughout the night. Enjoy!
