Colonel Pavlo Yelizarov is one of the most atypical figures of this war: a former television producer who, after February 24, 2022, joined the army and created an effective drone unit, Lasar’s Group. During the full-scale war, his team destroyed billions of dollars of Russian equipment and became a symbol of how quick thinking, engineering intuition, and the right selection of people can change the course of war. In early 2026, after large-scale changes in the defense management system, Yelizarov was appointed deputy commander of the Air Force – with a focus on the development of small-scale air defense and countering drones. This interview for Ukrainska Pravda took place one hundred days after Mykhailo Fedorov headed the Ministry of Defense – a period that many within the system characterized as a time of acceleration, new approaches, and attempts to change the logic of war. We have been planning this conversation for a long time and are grateful that Elizarov found the time.
