A potential Labour rebellion over the calling of a ceasefire in Gaza may have been defused after Sir Keir Starmer was thrown a lifeline by the Commons Speaker. Sir Lindsay Hoyle allowed amendments from Labour and the government to be voted on in an unusual move that caused uproar in the Commons on Wednesday afternoon, with one MP shouting: “Bring back Bercow!”, a reference to Hoyle’s predecessor, John Bercow.
