Timbuktu could soon be re-instated to its ancient role as capital of knowledge and culture, thanks to a project with a European partner. The French region of Rhone-Alpes is co-funding an effort to safeguard Timbuktu's vast collection of historic manuscripts, which are traditionally held by families in their private homes. But it is a race against thieves eager to profit from illegal trafficking in the priceless documents.
