The temple offers breathtaking views of Kullu and the Parvati Valley and is famous throughout India for its unique religious significance. The Mystery of the Name The temple is named "Bijli Mahadev" because, according to popular belief, lightning strikes the Shivalinga in the temple approximately once every 12 years. The lightning strike shatters the Shivalinga, after which the temple priests join the pieces with a special paste of butter and sattu. After some time, the Shivalinga reappears in its original form. Devotees believe that Lord Shiva himself protects the entire Kullu Valley by taking this lightning upon himself. Mythology According to legend, a demon named Kulant, assuming the form of a giant serpent, attempted to submerge the Kullu Valley. Lord Shiva slew him and protected the valley. The Bijli Mahadev Temple is believed to have been established in memory of this incident. Temple Features An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Traditional Kath-Kuni style architecture.
