GHANA SAID NO TO RAMAPHOSA: We can't Build Africa Fighting each other.Ghana & S.A must Fix this Now
BILATERAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GHANA AND SOUTH AFRICA FOR A CENTURY NOW Am your Village BØŷ, let me take you back. Ghana and South Africa are not strangers. We are brothers. Not only did Ghana support the anti-apartheid struggle, but also South Africa supported Ghana’s Pan-African dream. From Nkrumah to Mandela, our leaders sat in the same room and said: "Africa must be free." For over a century, our people have moved. Ghanaian traders went to Johannesburg. South African companies came to Accra. Our musicians play in each other’s concerts. Our football teams fight, and then hug after. The main tool we use today is the Bi-National Commission (BNC). It’s where presidents of both countries meet to talk trade, security, education, and migration. Ghana was supposed to host the next BNC in August 2026, co-chaired by President John Dramani Mahama and President Cyril Ramaphosa. From Ghana to South Africa, and from South Africa to Ghana we’ve built banks, telcos, churches, and families. This is why what happened now hurts. Pan-African Question 2: Ghana helped South Africa get freedom. South Africa helps Ghana with business today. Which other two African countries have this kind of "freedom brotherhood" and how can we copy it? WHY THE PRESIDENT OF GHANA REFUSED OR DECLINED SOUTH AFRICA PRESIDENT’S VISIT Now to the truth. Ghana did not cancel. Ghana asked to postpone. Here’s how and why: HOW: In July 2026, Ghana sent a diplomatic communication to Pretoria asking President Ramaphosa to defer his August visit. It was not for a state visit, but for the BNC meeting Ghana was to host. WHY: 1. Xenophobic attacks in South Africa - Over the past months, there have been anti-migrant protests. Foreign-owned shops were looted, and some people were attacked. 2. Death of a Ghanaian - Ghana reported that 40-year-old Bashiru Isak was shot dead on June 30 during demonstrations in Cape Town’s Khayelitsha. Government said it was linked to the attacks. 3. Safety of Ghanaians - Ghana had already repatriated hundreds of citizens after a June 30 "deadline" by an anti-migrant group in South Africa. The Foreign Ministry said protecting lives comes first. 4. Diplomatic message - Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu said on Joy FM: "It would be better for the two sides to meet when matters settle." He added it would be appropriate for Ramaphosa to visit "when the issue of xenophobic attacks no longer hangs over such discussions." South Africa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said there was confusion, and that both sides will find a new date. Pan-African Question 3: If a leader of one African country cannot guarantee safety for citizens of another African country, should that visit happen? What would you do if you were President Mahama? SOME EFFECTS OF XENOPHOBIC ATTACK ON GHANAIANS IN SOUTH AFRICA This is where it pains Village BØŷ. 1. Loss of life - Families in Ghana lost sons and brothers. One death is too many. 2. Fear and displacement - Ghanaian traders in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban closed shops. Some ran to shelters. 3. Repatriation - Government flew hundreds home. That cost money, and broke families who left children behind. 4. Business losses - Ghanaian-owned restaurants, barbers, and phone shops were looted. Years of work gone in one night. 5. Psychological trauma - Young Ghanaians who went to SA for "greener pastures" now say "Africa is not safe for Africans." 6. Diplomatic tension - Trust between two governments is damaged. Projects are delayed. From Accra to Johannesburg, mothers are asking: "Why are we killing each other?" Pan-African Question 4: If a Ghanaian is attacked in South Africa, or a South African in Ghana, who is responsible? The government, the people, or all of us as Africans? Let’s produce what we eat. Let’s eat what we produce. And let’s protect each other while we do it.
