Henrik Vibskov: A Designer Loving Color and Chaos | Louisiana Channel

"My work is pretty colorful. Hopefully, sometimes, also a bit surreal." Danish designer Henrik Vibskov is known for his colorful and experimental silhouettes. Watch him talk about his approach to working with textiles. At age 10, Henrik Vibskov was gifted a drum kit by his older siblings. He started playing in different bands and soon learned how big of a role appearance and how you dressed played. This is how textiles became part of Vibskov's consciousness, and clothing design became part of his life: "I ended up working with textiles by coincidence," Henrik Vibskov says and continues: "It's a very fragile material. And I think that people sometimes kind of forget that it's made of thin fibres." You can't picture a garment by Henrik Vibskov without immediately picturing solid and exciting colors. "I've always been liking colors a lot. Strong color has been important to me." The second thing you imagine when thinking about Vibskov's design is the challenging silhouettes of the clothes: "Silhouettes and forms are really important in the way of working with textiles. A thing to remember is functionality," he says and elaborates: "If there's only one leg it becomes a bit tricky. Two legs are better. Three legs is a possibility, but maybe you don't need it." Henrik Vibskov (b. 1979) is a Danish designer and artist. As a designer, he has produced over 40 clothing collections since graduating from Central St. Matins in 2001. Since January 2003, he has been a Chambre Syndicale de la Mode Masculine member. He is one of the few Scandinavian designers on the official show schedule of the Paris Fashion Week. Since the beginning of his career, Henrik has been invited to and participated in festivals, contests, and talks such as Artist Talk at London Design Week in 2017, Exhibition design and curating of Mindcraft17, Danish Pavilion at Salone del Mobile Milan in 2017, Art Basel Miami, One Week Workshop at Domaine Boisbuchet, France 2016. He has also produced several large-scale solo exhibitions at museums and galleries, including the TEMPO at Stockholm Stadsteater, Sweden, and the Daelim Museum in Seoul, South Korea. His "Neck Plus Ultra" exhibition, which was shown at Galeries Lafayette in Paris and Gammel Strand in Copenhagen, an extensive retrospective of his work at Designmuseum Helsinki in Finland, and most recently the Solo Exhibition in Sophienholm, Copenhagen. Henrik Vibskov is currently a Professor at DSKD. He has frequently lectured and been a jury member at institutions such as Central Saint Martins in London, the IED in Madrid and the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Art, among others.
