This layout is something I’ve wanted to tackle for a while: a compact, multi-level scene with layered track, a canalside industrial setting, and operations that are interesting without needing a traditional fiddle yard. In this video I walk through my full thought process — the inspiration from exhibition layouts, why I wanted something small but operationally rich, and the challenge of designing a 00 gauge micro layout that doesn’t feel cramped. I show the many AnyRail track plans I experimented with, including how I ended up using a wagon turntable rather than a diamond crossing and why I settled on a board size of 60cm x 100cm. I also build the entire baseboard from scratch, including the stepped lower canal section, angled front edge, batten supports, V-cut cable channels, and all the structural choices that make this layout work.
