Joan Clos invites us to participate in the city we live in, to visualize the main challenges we must face for the development of better planned, sustainable, and compact cities. He was mayor of Barcelona from 1997 to 2006. From 2006 to 2008, he was Spain's Minister of Industry, Trade, and Tourism. Subsequently, he served as Spain's Ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan. A graduate of the first class of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, ​​Joan Clos studied at the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona. After graduating with a degree in Medicine, he worked at the Center for Health Analysis and Programs (CAPS). After several years practicing as an anesthesiologist, he radically changed his career path and focused on Epidemiology, Community Medicine, and healthcare resource management. In 1979, he joined the Barcelona city government as Director of Health Services, and from 1983 onwards, he embarked on a distinguished career in public service. Since October 2010, he has been Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), with the rank of Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.
