Winkler Knives - "Warrior Tested" (Daniel Winkler)
Daniel Winkler, founder of Winkler Knives, is a Master Bladesmith with several decades of experience making knives. He made his first knife in 1975 and later transitioned to a full-time knifemaker in 1988. When you've mastered a craft, you've honed skills that make you a subject matter expert. In 1993, he earned accreditation as a Master Bladesmith, by the American Bladesmith Society. Daniel builds some of the toughest cutting tools in the industry. These pieces are expertly designed and beautifully crafted using top-notch materials. The sheaths are carefully crafted by his wife and longtime partner, Karen Shook. Both, Daniel and Karen, operate Winkler Knives. "The Tradition of the Past, A Legacy for the Future" (Winkler Knives). I've been using Winkler Knives for several years and can honestly say they are absolutely dependable cutting tools. I've also learned to understand their intended purpose and capability. His knives are some of my favorite outdoor tools and everyday carry. The tools shown in the video are made of 80CrV2 steel. This steel has been around for a long time, under the nickname, "Swedish Saw Steel." This steel is a workhorse that offers extreme toughness. Winkler Knives heat-treats this steel to 60 HRC, resulting in stellar crystalline micro-structure with good edge retention. 80CrV2 steel is not a stainless steel, even though it is alloyed with small amounts of chromium, vanadium, and nickel. Winkler knives are coated with a black oxide finish, to help prevent corrosion. It is still recommended that you keep your knives clean, dry, and with a light coating of oil (Tsubaki or Thirteen Chefs Mineral Oil), before storing them away. I use a "Knife Balm" that I made a couple years ago. I will be uploading a DIY video on how to make this balm at home.
