A funny and unusual story from my younger days — a chance meeting in Miami that led me to the Philharmonic, classical music, and some very strange misunderstandings along the way. Back in the 1970s, I was driving my Volkswagen when it stalled in the middle of a huge puddle and started floating. A woman with a BMW came along and helped push me out. That unexpected moment turned into meeting someone who worked for the Miami Beach Philharmonic. She introduced me to a world of music I had never really experienced before. She would tell me the personal stories and behind-the-scenes details about the musicians, so when I sat in the audience listening to Mozart, Schubert, or Beethoven, I wasn’t just hearing the music — I was also thinking about all the interesting lives of the people performing it. Being young and not having much money, I was learning about classical music in my own unusual way. I even had a homemade cassette tape labeled as Beethoven 5th, but it turned out to be a mix of his different symphonies. For a while, I thought Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony was supposed to suddenly turn into the Ninth. When I finally realized what happened, I thought it was hilarious. Later, at a party with her friends, I mentioned that I had been listening to minimalist composers, especially Philip Glass. They asked which compositions I liked — and I remembered the music but couldn’t remember the title of one of my favorites: Koyaanisqatsi. That piece is also the music featured in this video. Toward the end, I play the section where my ears always seem to hear the chorus saying “Bob, Bob, Bob…” even though those are not the actual words. Apparently, my brain has always been good at hearing lyrics incorrectly. This is just a personal memory — a little story about music, relationships, misunderstandings, and life in the 1970s. There’s even an unexpected neighborhood leaf blower making a guest appearance halfway through the recording, and I decided to leave it in because sometimes real life becomes part of the story. Thanks for watching another piece of my homemade life. Check out my other video stories I have made now and then for the last 19 years in my story or comedy playlist.
