After performing as a guitarist in punk and rock bands through his teens and early twenties, Inoue immersed himself in DJ culture following his encounter with acid jazz in 1989. Under the names Chari Chari and Kaoru Inoue, he has released numerous original works and remixes, exploring the possibilities of alternative dance music across clubs, festivals, and open-air events. In 2003, he founded his own label Seeds And Ground under the “Crue-L” umbrella (becoming fully independent in 2009), focusing primarily on dance music released under his real name, Kaoru Inoue. His rich musicality—beyond what can be expressed in DJ sets alone—also appears in Aurora Acoustic, a minimal acoustic guitar duo with Daisuke Kojima (DSK). In 2014, he revived the Chari Chari name for the first time in 12 years, reimagining it as a live band. In 2016 he released the analog single “Fading Away / Luna de Lobos,” followed by the 2018 album Em Paz via Portuguese label Groovement, shifting focus toward more electronic and ambient textures away from dancefloor intensity. In 2020, he released We hear the last decades dreaming, the first new Chari Chari album in 18 years, followed by the 2021 remix album Mystic Revelation of Suburbanity. Its organic, ethnic-tinged electronic sound drew significant attention. Recently, his DJ sets—connecting Jazz, Ambient, Balearic, Experimental, and more with a uniquely refined sensibility—as well as his return to fundamental electronic composition rooted in environmental and “fourth world” influences, continue to earn wide acclaim.
